The original London production in 2008 won four Olivier Awards and has since toured the UK for a number of years. It originally opened in 2002 on Broadway featuring songs such as You Can't Stop the Beat, Big, Blonde and Beautiful and Good Morning Baltimore and went on to win eight Tony Awards. Hairspray the Musical is based on the 1988 film of the same name, which starred Divine and Ricki Lake and directed by John Waters. The special also went on to be nominated for seven Emmy Awards, winning three. It premiered in the US back in 2016 to almost 10 million viewers and received a positive response from critics. The television special stars Jennifer Hudson, Ariana Grande, Kristin Chenoweth, Dove Cameron, Harvey Fierstein, Martin Short and newcomer Maddie Baillio who plays lead role Tracy Turnblad. It will be available for UK audiences from Friday, May 29 for 48 hours via Whats On Stage and features all the fan-favourite songs from the musical. Theatregoers will be able to stream the NBC television special of hit musical Hairspray.
